Sometimes I feel as though people have become blind and deaf to the world around them. They cover their ears when there are such beautiful stories and songs to be heard. They shut their eyes when there are such breathtakingly beautiful places and things to see. Why does this happen?
WONDER: [wuhn-der] verb…
"To be filled with admiration, amazement, or awe; marvel”
Have we lost our sense of wonderment at the world around us?
Do you remember what it was like being a kid and getting your first glimpse of a clear starry night sky? Or feeling the wind blow through your hair on a warm summer day? It was simple moments like these that were so easy to treasure and hold dear because we had so little to worry about as kids. Moments like these were full of wonder. Now that we are grown up, does it mean that we should loose our sense of wonder? I say no.
If you feel like you have reached a rut in your week, your month, or maybe in your life, just take a moment to step away from it all. Go on a walk outside or stay up late and look up at the starry sky. Do whatever you need to do to bring back that sense of wonder. For me, it’s listening to music. I don’t surround myself with rap or hip-hop. Just like the saying, “you are what you eat,” I also believe that “you are what you surround yourself with.” If you spend everyday listening to the lies that are fed to us in our culture’s media and music, you end up looking at the world through the lens of the ideals and morals you are surrounding yourself with. The same goes for the people you surround yourself with. Only you have the power to change your life and to reawaken your wonder about the world around you. I hope and pray each of you never loses that wonder and if you’ve lost it, I pray you are able to find it!
